2011: The Year in Review

brittanny

2011 has been a hell of a year for me. My photography has evolved so much over the past year. I'm starting to come into my own style that I'm happy with. My style will be constantly evolving and I'm already planning on trying out new things in 2012. The first two years of my career was just figuring out what the hell I was doing and in 2011 I saw it all finally come together. No photographer should be complacent in their work. They should always be ready and willing to learn more. There is so much more to learn and I'm excited to see what the new year will bring.

I thought about how I wanted to wrap up this year in one post. Did I want to show my favorite photos of the year like I did last year? I could but it wouldn't be very personal and you guys have already seen all these photos before. So I thought that the more entertaining option would be to show you my year through my Instagram photos. With the help of ink361.com, I complied some of my favorite moments of 2011.

The majority of the year outside (and sometimes during) work has been hanging out friends, old and new. I've become friends with some awesome people this year. I definitely have a great support system of creative and fun friends to help keep me going, especially when times are tough.

This year I had the chance to meet my half-sister for the first time. She actually found me through this website! Along with building a relationship with her, Shawn and I now have two beautiful nieces to hang out with.

Going through my Instagram feed, I saw that the majority of my photos were of food and drinks. We definitely ate extremely well this year.

I've had so many fantastic photo shoots this year. The thing that really made them great has been collaborating with so many people. I've had the chance to work with great models, designers, makeup artists, and hair stylists this year. I've also filmed more behind the scenes videos which helped me get back into my love of video.

Speaking of video, the end of the year brought along two new video projects. For those who don't know, I got my degree in Film Studies and I focused on video editing. My lovely friend Jasmine who works for Style Week Providence remembered me saying how I wish I did more video work. After a ton of meetings we came up with The Trunk Show, a video blog on what's stylish in Rhode Island. I also came up with a new personal project called 'stripped' which lives up to it's name. It's just the artist and the camera, performing for no one else but for who is watching.

I've had some great experiences this year. I got to shoot Dropkick Murphys four times! I was honored when I was asked the first time but I got to keep coming back to shoot more. From building a relationship with the DM family, I was asked to shoot the advertisements for Lola's Tequila Bar and Cantina. Also I was asked to shoot an Oribe event in Boston. Shooting for a celebrity hair stylist and about 30 plus hair stylists there to learn some techniques from him was quite the experience.

I have to thank my fiance Shawn for being so supportive of my career and just being there for me throughout our entire relationship. He is my best friend and I'm so lucky to have him be there for me, and even dealing with the third person in our relationship (my computer).

Even though this year has had its downs, it truly has been amazing. I am lucky to have my friends, family, and health. Here's to 2012 being even better!

Trip to New York City // Instagram | iPhone photography app review

brittanny

Grand Central in ManhattanThis past weekend Shawn and I went to New York City to shoot with Bombshell Clothing. The last time I shot for Keriann was so awesome that I had to go to NYC to work with her again, but I'm saving all that for another post. This post will be reviewing the Instagram iPhone app. I've been using it for a couple of weeks now and I have to say it is super addicting!

iPhone screenshot of the camera taking a photo of this very blog post. Very meta. The cool thing about Instagram is that you can upload your photo directly to Twitter, Tumblr, Flickr, Facebook, and Foursquare. Yes, you can even check in on Foursquare with this app. For me personally that is the feature that really sold me on this app.

You have twelve effects you can choose from. Once you pick the effect you like, you click next and it gives you the sharing options.

Another cool feature of Instagram is you can follow your friends and see their photos taken with Instagram within the app. You can also "like" and comment on their photos within the app. You can also check out the popular photos taken with Instagram and find cool new people from all over the world to follow.

So why did I bring up my trip to New York? I used the Instagram app all weekend to check into Foursquare and to take photos of the city. Here are a bunch of photos I took around Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens.

You can download it here and be one of the thousands addicted to this iPhone app.

The Week in Photos // 08.16.10

The majority of last week was spent with friends and having and planning photo shoots. Sunday we went to Lauren O'Jea, makeup artist extraordinaire, birthday party. She has the funniest friends and Shawn and I had a great time.

Friday I shot my friend Amanda. I've known Amanda since I was eight. I haven't seen her in a few years but after a few minutes it was just like old times.

Lauren O'Jea did makeup for the shoot. She painted an Aurora Borealis on Amanda's face.

Shawn played with Wine Rack Kitty aka Benji after he set up the lights for the shoot.

Saturday I shot Noelle Elisabeth and Haley Giovanni together. They're friends and have wanted to shoot together in the past so I was happy to get them together in a shoot. My inspirations was The Devil's Rejects or mostly two girls running from a psycho hillbilly axe murderer but looking hot and composed the whole time. Lauren O'Jea did makeup for this shoot as well.

I got them really dirty but they didn't mind.

So that was my week. How was yours?

What's this? A Week in Photos post? I haven't done one of these in months. I actually took some photos this week that were unrelated to photo shoots. So let's get into it, shall we?

On Wednesday, Shawn, our friend Steff, and I went to a Red Sox game. They lost ::sadness::

Friday night, 4zero1 had a fashion show at The Spot Underground. They had some live music before the fashion show began.

Saturday, I went to check out the reception hall with the bride of the wedding I'm shooting in a few weeks. Thankfully wedding reception was happening there later that day so the hall was already set up so I knew what to expect.

Afterward, we needed some lunch so we went to my favorite place for vegetarian hot dogs, Spikes.

The bride, Cecilia, waiting for her food.

So that's all I have for this week. I know it's not a lot but it's a (re)start. Today I will be going to my makeup artist's Lauren's birthday party. I should be taking a lot of photos there.
