Celebrating Diversity 2010

Tomorrow is the artists' reception for Celebrating Diversity at the Attleboro Arts Museum. I was in this show last year and it has become even larger this year featuring artists from all of New England and New York. Click on the cards to above to see who is showing and also the schedule for the day. Attleboro is having a Winter Night Festival later on that and is free and open to the public.

There will be music and refreshments at the show and it is free and open to everyone.

Jayne Riot wearing Lush Punk and Sisters of the Moon

Earlier I made a post about the Sleeping Beauty necklace I received from Lush Punk (click here to read that post). This past Sunday I shot Jayne Riot wearing the necklace at the home of Sisters of the Moon designer Shayl. Shayl's clothing made a perfect accompaniment to Lush Punk's necklace.

A happy mistake

This photo of Miss Carnage is one of those throwaway shots that I ended up loving. During the Fetish Flea every once in awhile my flash wouldn't fire leaving me with shots too dark to use. When I saw this one when I was reviewing the pictures in the camera I hoped that I could still use it and sure enough I could and I love it.

Lush Punk

I just received my SLEEPING BEAUTY Ornate Mirror Black Noir Necklace from Lush Punk, a gothic/punk/ noir jewelry designer on Etsy. I would go into Lush Punk but my compatriot Jayne Riot has already done that for me. I strongly suggest checking out her post on Lush Punk here.

I love the necklace. It has a good quality build for the price. Normally when you buy jewelry for under $20 you can feel the cheapness but not with this necklace. It's ornately designed without looking like cheap costume jewelry.

Look for the necklace to be featured in a photo shoot with Jayne Riot in the future.

Check out Lush Punk and buy some jewelry!

Backstage at the New Designers' Fetish Fashion Show

Yesterday was the New Desginers' Fetish Fashion Show and I was one of the photographers for the event. I got there early to hang out with some of my models and to meet some new girls. It really was a great show. My friend Shayl, designer of Sisters of the Moon, put on a great show. Some of my other favorites were Latex Nemesis and Dawnamatrix Designs. There will be more posts about the show later but here are a few photos to hold you over.

Celebrating Diversity - the postcards

Just got in the postcards for the new show I'm in. They're really great quality. They put some money in it. If you look closely you can see my name toward the bottom of the list.

The point of this post is to test the iPhone app for squarespace.

New edit from Mulan D shoot

I'm sitting here, waiting for the snow to come. I was under the impression that when I woke up there would already be inches of snow but it has just started snowing. I have a video that needs to be edited and sent out as soon as possible so hopefully I won't be trapped in my house tomorrow and I can get it done then.

In the meantime I took a photo from my shoot with Mulan D and did a different edit on it. Click on it to see it bigger and check out more Mulan D photos here.

ShakeItPhoto | iPhone photography app review

ShakeItPhoto could be one of my favorite apps for the iPhone. It costs $.99 and it's worth every penny. I use it practically every day. It takes photos taken with iPhone and turns them into Polaroids. I like this app more than other Polaroid apps which are available for free like Polarize because it doesn't have the bar at the bottom for writing notes. You can add text at the bottom of the photo in Polarize but since I have a personal preference to square photos (maybe since I shoot a lot of 120 film in real life), I like ShakeItPhoto better.

The great thing about this app is that you can use photos previously taken with the iPhone instead of just being able to take photos within the app. Since the app takes photos already on the iPhone, any photo can be edited. Only one of the photos used in this review was taken with the iPhone (it was taken with the Hipstamatic app). Two were taken with a Sony point and shoot, one is an iPhone wallpaper, and one is a scan of my fiancé when he was 10.

It's a fun yet simple app that I think is a must buy. It even makes the sound like Polaroid cameras and you have to shake the phone to make the photo develop faster. I give the app 5 out of 5 stars.

Hipstamatic | iPhone photography app review

Hipstamatic is one of the many photography apps available for the iPhone. It mimics the look of Lomo cameras (I tend to shy away from calling them "plastic toy cameras" because with the price of Lomo cameras, film, and developing, there is nothing cheap about it). The name Hipstamatic probably comes from the term "shooting from the hip", which basically means fire the shutter and what you'll get will be a surprise. Some Lomo cameras don't even have a viewfinder (such as the SuperSampler). The name could also come from the fact that Lomo cameras have become pretty popualr with the Hipster crowd and are sold at exorbitant prices at places like Urban Outfitters.

Hipstamatic retails at $1.99 which isn't bad at all for an iPhone app. But don't expect to get all the features for that price. With the invention of in app purchases, you can buy extra features within the app. You can buy "HipstaPaks", which include extra lenses, films, and flashes for an extra $.99 a set. So the total for everything came to $4.99, which still is a pretty good price for everything you're getting.

Now on to the pros and cons. I like that there are so many options for lenses and films. I assume they have recommended films to work with certain lenses which you'll see in the HipstaPaks menu but you can mix and match and the results are endless. I also like that you can upload directly from the app to Facebook. Hopefully soon they will add the feature to send to Twitter as well.

The downside is the layout is horrible. It's designed beautifully but if you touch the wrong thing you end up in the in app store or you don't get back to the camera or you end up in the HipstaPak menu... It's a mess. I find myself clicking on everything else except what I want to when I'm just trying to get to the viewfinder. I'm sure after much use you'll get used to where you're going but when you're in a rush and you're trying to take a photo, you might miss your chance. Which leads to another problem, you can't use a photo you've already taken. Most iPhone apps (I know every other one I've ever used) lets you import a photo already in your library to edit. You can't with this one and that is a major bummer. There are photos that I've already taken that I would love to edit within the app but I can't. Another let down are the flashes. They're pretty much pointless.

EDIT: Another downside is that the photo only saves to 525 pixels which is pretty small compared to other apps that can save in higher resolution.

Even though it seems I have more cons than pros, I actually do like the app. It offers features some of the other popular iPhone apps don't offer, like the ability to change lenses and film. According to the website, some of the new features are coming are exporting to Flickr, shake to randomize, a new free flash, and a new HipstaPak. I hope that they add a fisheye and a tilt shift lens to the app.

All in all, I would give the app 3 1/2 out of 5 stars.

Morning in Providence - Time Lapse

I woke up last Friday morning and saw that the moon was huge and red. I grabbed my camcorder and filmmed the moon setting. I was so in a rush to catch it before it set that instead of finding something to sit the camera on, I held the camera with one hand and held the blinds open with the other (hence the shaking). The next morning I set the camera up to catch the sunrise. My friend's view from her apartment building faces the highway so it added a nice visual to the video.

The music was provided by permission by Meghan Tonjes. She is one of my favorite YouTubers. She's funny and talented and I'm hoping to convince her to come to Rhode Island for a show.

This girl's apartment

Well it's not my apartment. My fiancé and I are apartment sitting for a friend who visited her friends in Utah for a couple of days. She's a pretty stylish person (she should be since she is a personal stylist) so that style translates to her apartment. I brought over my Nip/Tuck DVD to watch but it froze in the middle of one of the episodes (thanks Netflix for sending me a cracked DVD). Since I had nothing to watch, I grabbed my camera and took some photos.

A new start to this blog

I only used this blog to promote shows my work is in but that's not enough. I use my Facebook fan page to do most of my updating. I want to do more with this blog though so I will be posting photos that aren't going to have their own set, my videos, and articles on modeling and photography. So be on the look out for lots of new content. Add this blog to your RSS feeds to get updated once a new blog entry is posted.
